Title: People Track: 3 Composer: Koichi Sugiyama Performers: London Philharmonic Orchestra Album: Symphonic Suite Dragon Quest I & II
A lot of whacky and disastrous weather has been happening all around ( some fierce thundering and indecisive weather around here in Rhode Island). My thoughts go out to those who have it much worse than us and others…
Today’s piece is the piece “People,” which would be your expectant town’s theme. Very lyrical, playful, and jovial. Where would I place this under? Probably a themes in variation piece. I was greatly found of the movie-intermission-concession-stand-esque variation a little past half way the track (glockenspiel and pizz. strings; timing is 2:03). It reminds me of the intermission bit you’ll hear later in the series (Intermezzo)—WAIT, WAIT, where the heck is that timpani portamento that’s supposed to be in that version?! I guess I’ll settle for this…
Title: Château Ladutorm Track: 2 Composer: Koichi Sugiyama Performers: London Philharmonic Orchestra Album: Symphonic Suite Dragon Quest I & II
Upon pressing start at the title screen, you are brought to the king’s throne room where you are greeted with this piece—in its 5-channel Nes/Famicom glory—and the start of your…Dragon…quest (I’ll be here all week, folks).
For some reason I get a Vivaldi vibe (again, here all week). Maybe throw in a harpsichord continuo in place of/together with the Bass…but then again, I’d then would like it sped up like a Vivaldian violin concerto, completely changing the piece, so I say keep it as it is and marvel at its orchestral majesty.
Now that I think about it…I wonder why we don’t have any Dragon Quest concerts here in the States, or at least included them in videogame concert programs. I’m sure there are a couple…perhaps just not broadcasted as highlights in the program.
Do you know of any videogame concerts in the USA that have included a piece from the Dragon Quest series in their program?
Now that I am officially done with college, I have a little bit more time to spare with posting videogame music. Well, and I’ll tell ya, I’ve picked up a great deal of game music since my last post.
I occasionally like to theme my posts around certain games, so this time I plan on posting the music of the Dragon Quest series. I recently did a batch purchase of 7-8 soundtracks of the series, so I think I have enough to last me the rest of this summer if I continually post every day.
I’ll try to keep things interesting with some of the posts and see what the track resembles to me in regards to classical music, or just information on the game series/composer. Without further ado, the “Overture March” of our beloved series and summer.
[SFW] A “future-trap” remix of the past, present, and future of The Legend of Zelda.
Working on a paper about the use of this game’s music in regards to development and narrative. It’s a bit of work…but the fun in playing through this game and listening to its soundtrack frequently is well worth it!
Title: Climb, Lest I fall Track: 05 Composer: Aivi Tran
If you took part in funding the Cryamore through Kickstarter, one of the perks was a digital download of the album. So far, only an 8-track album was released for download for backers. I’ve soaked in this first release for a while and really love this one track. If you’re a fan of snes games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past juxtaposed with 8-bit timbres…then you’re going to love the final release of the full album. I already foresee an amazing soundtrack. Here’s a taste of what I mean with this track, “Climb, Lest I Fall.”
Halved, the first concept videogame soundtrack
Halved is a little story about a person who has lost his purpose in life. The music reflects it with 6 particular tracks, the acts of the story.

Matthew Herbert Creates Experimental Music for iPhone Game
The British electronic producer and sound artist Matthew Herbert has created an experimental interactive soundtrack for the iPhone game PENTAPUZZLE, which is now globally available from the App Store for use on iPhone and iPod touch.
The game features a unique integration of music and gameplay. Placing and removing puzzle pieces adds and takes away various layers in the music making PENTAPUZZLE, a musical puzzle as well as an actual puzzle. Additional sounds have been hidden in the game and once found will allow the player to perform a jam session in addition to the main score.
PENTAPUZZLE is available for free from the App Store and users are encouraged to play the game using a stereo headset to enjoy the full audio experience.
